Shopping lust: Bags

I am not poor, but I am also not made of money.  So from time to time I will post the things I am LUSTING after that I just can’t justify purchasing.  Today that is Bags.

Here’s the thing:  I get bored.  Fast.  The fact that I still carry those Michael Kors Pocket Totes is a miracle; more likely I last about 3-4 weeks and am ready to move on.  Sometimes less.  I have a small collection of better bags (Coach, B Makowsky) listed on ebay right now in order to fund buying some new ones.  Because each of these has some problem:  Not enough structure, too much structure, not big enough, too big, not the right pockets, not enough pockets, too many pockets, etc.  The list goes on, but my husband has forbidden me from spending more than $100 on a bag unless I KNOW I will love it.  (He’s not allowed to buy expensive sunglasses, since he looses (on average) one pair per week.  It’s a trade-off.)

However these are the ones I’ve been lusting after and am actively looking for decent quality bags that are inspired by these:

Marni Printed Cotton and Leather Bag – Was $378, but sold at theoutnet.com and now I can’t find it.  Probably for the best.  I am in love with both the bold print and the way the interior is laid out.

Sara Berman “Mini” Jivvy Leather Cross-body Bag – $200 at theoutnet.com.  The studs appeal to my lurking goth, the color is perfect for all, and the size (14x12x4) appears right about where I want it.  But at $200…..

(In case you couldn’t tell, I like bold bags.  That is probably part of the problem, since they don’t go with everything.  I also want them relatively compact, otherwise I will carry my entire life around with me.)

Coach New Willis in Vermillion – A bit smaller (10x9x3.5), but a classic shape, more structure (like the 1st one) and I love the warm red. $298  The City Willis (same price) is a slightly different shape (12x7x3.5 rectangle) but the same idea, and is just as lovely.  In fact I almost like it a bit better….I would need to make sure that my tablet would fit, however.

I most CERTAINLY don’t need a bag the size (14x10x4) of this Micheal Kors Jet Set Tote, but he TOTALLY had me at Purple Python!  The chain detailing is right on trend,  as well.  *DROOL*  $298

I think I may do some shopping tomorrow… In the meantime, some quality time with eBay seems to be in order….

Labor Day Sales

I am of two minds when it comes to Labor Day sales.  On the one hand, I’m NEVER one to pass up a good sale; things I like at 20% off I LOVE at 50% off.  But the fact is that summer (and spring) are my WORST seasons.  If you look at my outfits, I wear a lot of black, olive, rust/red, purple, etc.  In other words, dark and RICH color palates.  Fall, Holiday and Early Winter.

So instead of the standard list of Labor Day sales, I’m going to focus on vendors that are putting EVERYTHING on sale, so that those of us who really need to be shopping the new season’s stuff can get on it!

6pm: The new fall lineup on sale starting 9/3

Swimsuits for All: 30% off plus free shipping with code LDSHIP

Footsmart: 15% OFF + FREE SHIPPING SITEWIDE* when your product total is $75 or more (Clearance included)

Fashion to Figure: Buy one get one 50% off, the entire site with code FTFBOGO

Karen Kane:15% Off ALL Regular Priced Items with code AFFREG15 through 9/30!

Styles for Less: Labor Day Sale: 20% off entire site

Jessica London: 30% off with code JLE3462

Roamans: 30% off with code RDLABOR30

Lane Bryant: Buy one get one free with code BOGOFREELB

Notice that several of my favorite sites are NOT on here: J.Jill, Coldwater Creek, Chico’s, Talbots, and Soft Surroundings all have minimal sale items or clearance items only.  Same appears to be the case for most of the department stores (Nordstrom’s, Dillards, Bloomingdales).

If you are interested in other possible sales (or looking for clearance pricing), check out the The Curvy Fashionista – Her list is pretty complete!

The Statement Necklace

I didn’t post an outfit of the day today because most of it was reruns – Black ponte pants from coldwater creek, a Black tank from Talbots, and this red cardigan that I got at Marshalls.

What I did to make it all come together, however, was to go for a statement necklace: Something big, bold, and with tons of personality.  The specific one I wore was mixed metals, spikes, and appealed to my latent heavy metal / goth tendencies.    Similar to this one, but with mixed metals (gold, copper, silver, gunmetal grey).

However that’s me.  The statement necklace can be anything as long as it’s big and in your face.  It needs to be set against a relatively simple backdrop (in my case black framed with a red cardi) and allowed to be the focal point of your outfit.  Here are a few others from Etsy that caught my eye:

I am particularly fond of the middle one; with a pair of olive cargo pants, black tee and boots this would be just the right level of girly to contrast with an almost military look.  Or with a cream top and skirt in one of the colors of the flowers for something a bit more feminine.

Regardless, the idea is that the necklace should be the standout, with the remainder of the outfit serving as a backdrop for one big, in your face piece.  I love this idea and will be playing with it all fall.  (Time to go shopping! 🙂

OOTD August 29, 2012

Nothing fancy today; I have to hike across campus for a 1pm meeting, so comfort was the name of the game.  This is the ONLY top I have that has even a little of the color of the shoes I ordered last week in it, and since those seemed very comfortable and like good candidates for today’s walk, this shirt won.  Some shopping might be in order to give me more options!

Top: Tommy Hilfiger, couple of seasons old

SIDE NOTE ON THE TOP:  The fabric on this top is lovely and soft, but I still waffle on the topic of anything that reads as horizontal stripes.  This isn’t as flattering as I might like.

Pants: Coldwater Creek White Knit Jeans (similar)

Shoes: Lifestride Taco in Teal (Yes, there really are bits of that teal color in the shirt, although it’s probably for the best that the shoes are that far from the top.)

Bracelet: Actually, it’s a necklace I’ve had for years…It’s uncomfortably tight on my neck, but doubled up it makes a nice, loose bracelet.

Glasses: (Progressive Bifocals *sigh*) Jessica McClintock JMC013 in Amethyst

One of the interesting things about posting my outfits every day has been that I am being far more demanding of my outfits than I had been in the past.  By demanding, I mean they need to fit, look flattering, work for my lifestyle and be in decent condition.  Taking pictures has resulted in my seeing things differently than before.

For example, the neckline on this top and the way the sleeves are attached make my shoulders look narrow, which is NOT an illusion that works on me. My shoulders need to look broader in order to compensate for the fact that hips are wider than my shoulders, so something that seems to be narrowing them is not good.  This shirt may be headed to the goodwill soon (or at least the “wear around the house only” part of the closet…

Fall Romance

Fall clothing is starting to appear, and of course I’m starting to shop.  One site that I check intermittantly is ShopRuche.com, a site with a similar aesthetic to Anthropologie, but which carries a plus line!  This morning I placed an order for a couple of items and drooled over a couple of others!

Dear Darling Curvy Plus Top
While this will definitely need a cami, this top combines the Peter Pan color trend with a terrific color.  I’ll almost certainly wear this with black trousers and perhaps a cardigan.

Starfield Print Curvy Plus Top

The colors of this top appealed to me; I love that type of rust shade, and this top struck me as very nice.  I probably won’t wear the belt because of my shape, although when it arrives I will play with it a little to see how it might work.

Island Getaway Curvy Plus Dress In BlackWere I in the market for a new little black dress, I would have jumped at this dress.  It is right on trend with the high-low skirt, but since it’s made out of jersey it would be comfortable and easy to care for!

They also had a number of other cute tops, skirts, dresses, and a few adorable retro bathing suits.  Well worth a look when you have a moment!  Once my items arrive, I’ll take pictures and post so you can see how they fit!

OOTD August 28, 2012

Today I wore one of my favorite summer dresses.  This Navy Seersucker Knit dress from Lands End has been a go-to all summer due to looking pulled together while feeling soft and light.  (Of course, it’s no longer available on their site.

The cardigan is one I’ve worn on here before from OneStopPlus.  The necklace is from a local artisan.  (Jewelry is a great way to support local artists AND find unique pieces!  It’s often less expensive than you would expect, as well.)

What is particularly great about the dress is the way the bodice is cut to emphasize curves.  (When I originally saw the dress in plus, they also had it in straight sizes.  The detailing on the bodice didn’t look right on the smaller body of the straight sized model.)

Notice the different directions of the stripes, with the almost bra-like cut and empire band under the bust.  These details accentuate the positives!

My only problem is that I was in between sizes when I bought it and wish I had chosen to go down a size rather than up.  This 3X is fitting kind of loosely right now, and would look a bit better if it were more fitted up top.  I might get it tailored before next summer.
Pikolinos - Moraira 845-8906F (Ron Leather) - Footwear

To add some kick, I wore this outfit with the red version of these shoes.  A girl can never have too many pairs of red shoes!  The brown would also work.
